2025 Asia Pacific Youth Touch Cup Final Results and Wrap-Up
May 17, 2025 @ 23:00 UTC
The Australia Athelite Emus retained the overall Asia Pacific Youth Touch Cup title, but New Zealand claimed their first Youth international gold medals since 2009.
The Emus took gold in the Boys and Girls 18s and Mixed and Women’s 20s, whilst New Zealand took home the Mixed 18s and Men’s 20s titles. Meanwhile, Tonga with two team entries participated in their first international youth touch competition and there was also a tournament debut for Lebanon at the event.
All six finals pitted the Emus against the Touch Blacks and with honours shared between the teams across the divisions in the pools, the final day was expected to go down to the wire, and it didn’t disappoint.
New Zealand won the first grand final of the day – the mixed 18s, but it went to a drop-off with the Touch Blacks scoring two tries in two minutes to claim a 9-7 win. Doubles for Keanu Graham and Dylan Yare helped the Kiwis on their way.
The Girls 18s grand final saw the Athelite Australian Emus chalk up a 6-1 win over New Zealand courtesy of a double to Alice Mitchell.
Meanwhile, in the Boys 18s Australia again prospered as they took victory 6-3 against New Zealand. The Touch Blacks scored a consolation in the closing minute of the match, but it was the Emus who claimed victory thanks to a Brandon Cox double and a stirring display from Jontaye Brown.
A second-half blowout gave the Athelite Australian Emus a dominant 11-5 win over the Touch Blacks in the Mixed 20s final. After a tight first half that Australia led 4-3, the green and gold shifted gears after half time to take the win – led by an influential performance from Kayliss Brown and classy doubles to Flynn Madders and Lily Neill.
A send-off in the seventh minute of the Women’s 20s game gave Australia a numbers advantage for the remainder of the game. Whilst it was a one-sided encounter, the Touch Blacks managed to keep the scoreline down, with the Athelite Australian Emus winning 9-2 in the end. The scoreline including a hat-trick to Ellie Wilson.
In the final game of the tournament, the Men’s 20s grand final between Australia and New Zealand produced a thriller with the match going to extra-time after a tied 4-4 scoreline – the third draw between the nations at the event. The Touch Blacks’ Thomas D’Urban-Burgess was the hero, scoring the only try in extra-time to give New Zealand the victory.
The Federation of International Touch and event hosts, Touch Football Australia, would like to thank all players, volunteers, staff, officials, and referees for their efforts in producing a successful event despite the intermittent wet conditions.
The Asia Pacific Youth Touch Cup is proudly supported by City of Moreton Bay.
